One of the main causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be food intolerance. And it is well worth finding out if this is the case with you.
Food intolerance and food allergies are two very different things entirely and should not be confused. If you suspect in any way that you may be allergic to a certain food you should seek professional advice immediately.
Some of the most common food intolerances are:
Lactose (found in cow’s milk)
Dairy Products
Wheat and Other Grains
Yeast
Caffeine
Alcohol
This list covers only a few of the food intolerances people suffer from. For instance one of the things I’m intolerant to are artificial sweeteners that contain aspartame, the other food intolerances I suffer from are wheat, corn and several other grains, cauliflower, broccoli, onions and a few other vegetables and also sugar.
All of these foods affect me differently and some cause more severe reactions than others but on the whole I try to stay away from all of them and I feel much, much better for doing so.
If you, like me, suffer from IBS and think it may be because of an intolerance to certain foods I suggest you start by cutting out that food for a few days and see if it makes a difference to you.
With some people it is just one food that affects them and can be cut from your diet with no problems at all, but if you suffer from a food intolerance to a whole group of things e.g. you suspect you are lactose intolerant you should consult a qualified physician, preferably someone who specializes in digestive disorders and food allergies.
