The query I most often get from home owners in Perth, is how to stop weeds taking over. My suggestion to them is have some kerbing done around the garden beds or trees. This has a dual purpose of controlling the weed growth and separating the lawn area from the beds for easier mowing. It is strong and durable.
It creates a feature, especially where you have a special tree or bed that you want to define. Garden edging or kerbing as it is known here in Perth, West Australia, gives a perfect finish to your yard. In beds where you place mulch, the kerbing will help keep the mulch from spreading onto the lawn area. It gets very hot and sunny in Perth, and the mulch helps keep the moisture in the soil. The lawn looks neat and tidy and will really set off the garden.
The kerbing comes in a variety of colours and can be made to match your brickwork; window frames driveways or any other feature. The most popular colour is the limestone.
Having garden kerbing done in your yard is certainly a very cost effective way to add value to your property. We can make circles, ovals, right angle corners straight lines or scallops. We have recently done kerbing in Perth suburbs where there has been major expansion in the new residential areas. The kerbing goes in before the lawn and reticulation, making the landscape planning easy.
Once you have decided where you want the kerbing to go and have marked it out on the ground we will lay it. Sometimes the ground will need some preparation done to ensure a level surface on which to lay the kerbing.
It is important to have the kerbing cut at about metre intervals for expansion. This will ensure the kerbing does not crack. This cutting is necessary in all areas not just in the hot sunny climate of Perth in West Australia.
The kerbing can be made in few different profiles. Mower Edge as the name suggests is the most popular as it provides a definite edge for the mower to cut along and has a lower side for the lawn or paving to butt up to and a higher side to keep the mulch and soil in the bed. The ‘Sloping Edge’ is a profile goes well alongside paths, driveways or garden beds. The sloping edge profile can be patterned if desired. The patterns add an interesting finish to the kerbing, some of the patterns available are Flagstone, Cobblestone and random. These are best suited with a colour added.
The square edge or ‘loaf of bread’ so called because of its look, is a great way to divide or define different areas of the yard. It works well as a garden bed edge. It is usually 100mm wide and can be laid to protrude above the grass or sunk to be the same level as the lawn.

What are the requirments of getting HELP (Higher Education Loan Program) or any other loans for study?
For a person 17/18 working part time. Going to university say 4 years. Living away from home,(not with parents. )
(Perth, WA)
I don’t think the above information is applicable to your situation in AUSTRALIA. Try looking at www.goingtouni.gov.au and you will see that there are actually two kinds of HELP loans. One is if you secure a Commonwealth Supported Place for your undergraduate study. This is known as HECS HELP.
Alternatively you may pay full fees and receive a FEE HELP from the government to cover costs.
The CSP is definately what you want and with HECS HELP, any amount over $500 paid up front receives a 20% discount. I think there is also an additional 20% add on if you take out a FEE HELP loan for undergraduate study. It’s primarily a merit system and I heard the new government will soon scrap full fee paying postions for domestic students.
In addition to this you would be interested in applying for Austudy and rental assistance but being under 25 this may be dependent upon your parents income. If you’re a good student take a look at differrent scholarships offered. This info can also be found on the goingtouni website or your university websites. With all of this you must of course be an Australian citizen.
