The Egyptian authorities are trying their very best to recover the ancient Egyptian artefacts from museum’s around the world. Egyptian authorities demand that the museums around the world must return the ‘stolen’ antiquities back to Egypt. Zawi Hawass, the head of Egypt’s supreme council of antiquities has been the most instrumental in this quest of recovering the country’s lost heritage. Since his appointment as the head of the antiquity council in 2002, Hawass has been relentlessly trying to get back the precious relics back to their home.

Hawass took a bold decision on October 7th when he decided to severe all ties with the prestigious Louvre museum in France until Louvre returns a series of tomb paintings to Egypt. Hawass also made it sure that Louvre should not carry on any excavation work in Egypt and prohibited a former Louvre Egyptologist from delivering a speech at Cairo. Abdel Halim Nureddin, a spokesperson of the antiquities department commented on October 10th that it is the Egyptian people’s right to witness the ancient works of art. Previously, Egypt had severed ties other museums too, like the St. Louis in the United States. The Louvre Museum authorities finally relented and decided to return back the reliefs to Egypt on October 10th. The reliefs, known as Steele, were chipped off the walls of the tomb of noble Tetaki and they depict a man’s journey into the afterlife.

Other relics demanded by the Egyptian authorities include the bust of Nefertiti, queen of Akhenaten from the Berlin Museum, the Rosetta stone from the British Museum, the Dendera Zodiac from the Louvre, a bust of pyramid builder Ankhaf from the Boston Museum of fine arts and a statue of architect Hemiunu, currently placed in the Roemer und Pelizaeus Museum in Germany. The basalt inscriptions on the Rosetta stone has been instrumental in deciphering the mystery of Egyptian Hierglyphics.

Meanwhile, in Germany the renovated Neues Museum, housing the Nefertiti relic, reopened on 23rd October. Hawass demanded that the 3500 year old statue was stolen from Egypt a century ago.
